Supporting cyclone recovery in Vanuatu

Climates supporters raised more than $2,600 to support  members of Vanuatu Climate Action Network (VCAN) to take charge of their recovery from recent cyclones.

On the 2nd and 3rd of March, Vanuatu was hit by two tropical cyclones, Judy and Kevin, and an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale. Cyclone Kevin hit Vanuatu just hours after cyclone Judy hit. Hundreds of thousands of people were impacted. Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) estimated that 80% of the total population have been affected, including an estimated 58,000 children under 15.

Vanuatu is a country on the front line of climate change. Civil society organisations in Vanuatu have been driving the effort to seek an opinion from the International Court of Justice on the legal obligations that countries have to act on climate change.

However, these community climate justice champions need our help now. Climates network of volunteers have been working with VCAN for more than 5 years and we’re proud to be able to support them in disaster recovery.
